With the building being almost one year old (18 days short of a year), the Health Sciences building at Ottawa U was part of Open Doors 2024.
We were the first visitors and were greeted by Dawn Stacey (left), one the Nursing Profs, and the Dean of the Faculty
The Bank of Montreal sponsored the atrium (as per the above photo, it is called the Social Heart. The name appears first in Algonquin, then French and then English)
We then went on a hour long tour of some of the facilities
First up was one of the many simulation labs, this one was a testing lab with a control room. Students would be working with a mannequin, operated by instructors in the control room, and have to deal with the various scenarios presented. "SimMan" mannequin costs $120,000
Next was one of 8 sim labs with a total of 64 beds
Then we visited Dietetic and Food Sciences
And Microbiology
Our tour guide, Dawn the Prof, was very keen on the food testing labs. Food is prepared and served through small openings in a wall. The room with the "testers" could change its lighting, and sound ambience as part of the testing of the food to see if food tasted differently under different conditions
An atmospherically control chamber is used for many medicals tests
Physiotherapy was next. They have a workshop to make various prosthetics etc for patients
Facilities included:
Audiology
Occupational Therapy
Rehabilitation/Physiotherapy (They were about to give a lengthy demo of their research so didn't have time to say much to us)
A head injury lab looked quite sparse but ran sophisticated studies.
(The video is 7 minutes long and the audio is not at its best)
A lab for studying the various effects and use of music was next
The library contains no books, more of a study hall
Dawn, our guide, was very keen on the "Turtle Room". A lecture room designed with indigenous principles/advice.
("Turtle Island" is the First Nations name for North America - based on its shape)
